Abstract [en]

The aim of this case study is to answer whether Eurocentrism is represented in Swedish high school textbooks today, and if so how does it manifest itself? This qualitative study will use three social study textbooks published 2010, 2011 and 2013 respectively to decide whether Swedish social study textbooks include Eurocentric representations. Previous Swedish scholars have mainly focused on Eurocentric representations in history books, whereas the latest examined history books investigated where published in the 1990's and the study was published in 2000 (Palmgren 2000). Much has happened in the political sphere since 2000, one of the major events being the terror attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001 which has significantly altered the world's view on non-Westerners – primarily Middle Easterners. This change in the political and media's sphere has been inevitable not least in Sweden and is a motivation for updating this field. Social study textbooks in particular focus greatly on different political views, societies and polities which is also why Eurocentrism can manifest itself in social study textbooks. This thesis will thus use postcolonial perspective, as it argues against Eurocentric framework of understanding, to describe and discuss the discourse of Eurocentric representation. Four dimensions of this discourse will form an analytical framework that will guide the analysis towards answering whether and how Eurocentrism is represented in Swedish textbooks. The analysis will show that Swedish textbooks do in various ways represent Eurocentrism, although to different extents
