Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The high rate of youth unemployment is a problem in Sweden. At the same time the Swedish government plans to delay the retirement age to maintain the welfare in Sweden. It is commonly accepted that older employed should make way for the younger in the labor market by retiring, but can the youth unemployment be decreased by increased retirements? Through an ADL-regression the study investigates the relation between the older employed over 65 years, immigration, GDP and inflation against the youth unemployment. The study covers a period between the years 2001-2013. The results of the study show no significant relation between the older employed and the youth unemployment. Neither does the immigration contribute to an increase in youth unemployment. What actually affect the unemployment of the young in the short run are the inflation rate and the growth in GDP which both has a negative relationship with the youth unemployment. An increase in inflation rate or GDP will decrease the youth unemployment. The study cannot support the commonly held belief that the youth unemployment can be decreased by retirements. The old generation on the labor market that has reached the retirement age does not affect the youth‟s opportunities to find a job and therefor does not contribute to increased youth unemployment
