"And so the lion fell in love with the lamb" : a textual analysis of The Twilight Saga, focusing ongender power distribution. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the gender power distribution in the films

The Twilight Saga. Methodologically we base our study on a three-stage model that describes communication on multiple levels. This to deconstruct the material and underline the power relations. The theoretical tools used to support our analysis are gender theory, theories of masculinity and queer theory. We have also used the concept of performativity to emphasize gender acts of the main characters.

Our analysis shows that

The Twilight Saga does contain a heteronormative gender power distribution in which the main female character is subordinate to the male characters through patriarchal structures. The male superiority is fortified through threats of violence and we find a hierarchical reproductive structure. Identified performatory actions are understood to be normative and reproducing as related to heteronormativity and we find that the characters are molded into their expected gender roles
