Parent's experience having a child being treated for cancer : a literature review (English)
Abstract [en]
Background. When a child is treated for cancer this affects the whole family for long periods. In Sweden about 250 children aged 0 to 15 years are diagnosed with cancer yearly. Aim- The aim of this study was to highlight parent's experiences when having a child treated for cancer.Method- Literature search has been done in Cinahl, Medline and PsycINFO where 8 articles were chosen. The articles have been reviewed to ensure quality. After that, the result was read and phrases that stood out were separated from the text and a summary of each was written.Then the codes were divided into subthemes and after that the subthemes created main themes.Result- The first period after the child's diagnosis the experiences often take form as chock, denial and stress. When the child underwent treatment parent's felt as the family were separated and change in daily life. After the treatment had ended parent's experienced being abandoned by the nurse staff. They also felt they lacked structure regarding the future. Conclusion- The parents experience anxiety, stress, and distress which lead to suffering.This suffering will always be there and cannot be eliminated. The health care should try to relieve and help parents through this tough situation. Be being there, giving support and meeting their needs, the nursing care can make it easier for parents.
