"Sometimes you just have to start flailing and hope for the best" : Interviews with security guards’ handling of threats and violence in their work environment (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Security guards are a group that suffers from threats and violence at the work place. In spite of this, their experiences of threats and violence at work are seldom brought to attention. One characteristic of the research on the subject is the importance of functioning groups in high-stress occupations. Research also has shown that there is a difference between security guards and police compared to medical professionals, where the latter does not see threats as a part of the job. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate how security guards perceived threatening situations at work. The informants all had full time employments as security guards and consisted of four men and one female. The age range was 24 to 48 years. The results showed that threats and violence were seen as a part of the job, however there were explicit boundaries as was to be tolerated and what was not to be. Furthermore, working with inebriated persons during expulsion or assistance was heavily associated with threats and violence. The informants also emphasized that colleagues was essential in the strategies for handling stressful situations, as they spend a lot of time together and experienced colleagues were key to handling such situations. The study also concluded that threats and violence was seen largely as a part of the job and that the security guards had several strategies for handling stressful situations with the support of colleagues
