Att leva med utvecklingsstörning innebär svårigheter att förstå och lära sig saker och kan variera beroende på om utvecklingsstörningen är grav, måttlig eller lindrig. Det är främst personer med lindrig utvecklingsstörning som får barn. Utvecklingsstörning kan medföra svårigheter i sociala och praktiska färdigheter samt en nedsatt intelligens. För att klara att vara förälder ställs det höga krav på emotionella, sociala och intellektuella resurser, något som kan vara en utmaning för föräldrar med utvecklingsstörning.

Syftet med studien är att ur familjebehandlares perspektiv beskriva deras verksamhet, insats och funktion för föräldrar med utvecklingsstörning.

Det empiriska materialet har inhämtats genom kvalitativa halvstrukturerade intervjuer med fem familjebehandlare som i sitt yrke kommer i kontakt med föräldrar med utvecklingsstörning. Intervjuerna har noggrant transkriberats ord för ord och analyserats genom kvalitativ innehållsanalys.

Resultatet visar att det övergripande temat i studien är att familjebehandlare arbetar pedagogiskt och använder sig själva som verktyg i arbetet genom att anta olika roller som vi valt benämna som den lärande, den uppfinningsrika och den myndiga. Varje roll fyller en viktig funktion i lärandeprocessen med föräldern och familjebehandlaren som växlar mellan rollerna utefter behov. De arbetar pedagogiskt, individuellt, tydligt och konkret för att kunna följa och stötta föräldern till att utveckla dennes föräldraförmågor. Familjebehandlaren tror på förälderns förmåga att vara förälder om de får rätt förutsättningar. Det kan vara svårt för familjebehandlaren att förhålla sig till barnet behov, föräldern och dess medborgerliga rättigheter samt samhället och dess insatser. De familjebehandlare samt de verksamheter som de representerar har tydligt visat på att arbetet med att öka föräldraförmågan hos föräldrar med utvecklingsstörning till stor del handlar om att utveckla kompetenser för att kunna bemästra vardagslivet i rollen som förälder

Living with an Intellectual disability entails difficulty understanding as well as learning things, and may vary depending on whether the intellectual disability is considerable, moderate or mild. Within the earlier mentioned categories, it is most common that people with mild intellectual disability have children. Intellectual disability can involve difficulties concerning social and practical skills as well as reduced intelligence. To cope with being a parent there are several skills that must be mastered, such as emotional, social and intellectual competence, a considerable challenge for parents with intellectual disabilities.

This study aims to describe the activities, the role and affect family support workers has on parents with intellectual disabilities.

The empirical material has been collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews with five family support workers, who in their profession come in contact with parents that have intellectual disabilities. The interviews has carefully been transcribed word for word and analyzed using the method of qualitative content analysis.

The results show that the comprehensive theme of the study is the fact that family support workers use themselves as tools by assuming different roles in their work; here named the learning, the inventive and the authoritative. Each role plays an important part in the parents learning experience, and the family support worker alternates between the roles to suit specific needs. They work in a pedagogic, individual and precise manner in an effort to support and promote parental skills. The family support worker believes in the parent’s ability of becoming a sufficient parent, providing adequate conditions. It can be difficult for the family support worker to relate to the needs of the child and the parent as well as the parents civil rights, society and social efforts. The family support workers and the municipal activities they represent have clearly implied that working towards increasing parental abilities, in parents with intellectual disabilities, deals with developing skills in order to master everyday life
