Motivational work in school : six secondary school teachers´ experiences of workning with low motivated students (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how secondary school teachers work with low-motivated students. The authors of the present study believe that a well-functioning motivational work should result in better school results and increased well-being for the students. Over 900 000 students spend their everyday in elementary school, where compulsory education should impart knowledge, standards and values, which they will bring into adulthood. The teacher is also responsible to motivate the students, something that becomes particularly clear when the student's own motivation for school work is low. By using qualitative interviews, the present study examined six secondary school teachers' experiences of working with low-motivated students. These experiences were analyzed and then interpreted based on the concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The results show that motivational work is difficult. Factors that affect motivation are the relationship between teacher and student, the classroom environment and the teacher’s ability to engage the student in their school work. The teachers consider a meaningful education important to motivate students
