Abstract [sv]

År 1989 utvecklades syftet med internet och vilka användningsområden det skulle innefatta [10]. Frame Relay fanns redan på 80-talet men användes då i telebranschen. Det fick senare en kraftig utveckling och började på 90-talet standardiseras för datorkommunikation [1, 2]. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) började utvecklas år 1997 men blev färdigt i början på 2000-talet [4]. Dessa två protokoll bygger på samma teknologi där

datapaket switchas istället för routas.

Rapporten tar upp tre scenarier som är fullt möjliga problem som skulle kunna uppstå i organisationers nätverk. För att lösa problemen krävs mätningar och tester för att fastställa skillnaderna mellan protokollen. Protokollen jämförs inte bara prestandamässigt utan också rent tekniskt för att komma fram till vilket protokoll och vilken implementering som kan fungera bäst. Baserat på resultaten i projektet tas bästa implementering fram som blir lösningar för de scenarier som sedan presenteras i diskussionen

Abstract [en]

In 1989 the purpose of internet developed and the uses expanded [10]. Frame Relay was already in the 80's but was used as in the telecommunications industry. It was later developed substantially and started in the 90's standardized for computer communications [1,2]. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) began to develop in 1997, but was completed in the early 2000’s [4]. These two protocols are based on the same technology in which data packets are switched instead of routed.

The report addresses three scenarios that are entirely possible problems that could occur in institutional networks. To solve these problems, measurements and tests are used to determine differences between the protocols. The protocols are compared not only in performance but also technically in order to decide what protocol and implementation that work best. Based on the results of the project, the best solution will be found and later implemented for each scenario and are presented in the discussion part.
