Abstract [en]

Background: Most nurses will, regardless of their workplace, meet and care for sick children in some way. How children communicate, think and act depends on their age. If the child de-velops a first good impression of the nurse it will affect the child’s total experience of the hos-pitalization. Also parents have a key role in the child’s hospitalization since they can transfer a feeling of security to their child. This essay aims to describe the child’s experience of the nurse.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the child’s experience of nurses while they are hospitalized.

Method: The used method was a literature review based on both qualitative and quantitative articles. Nine articles from the database Cinahl was chosen, read, reviewed and analyzed ac-cording to Fribergs analyzing model, the result consists of three themes and eight sub-themes.

Results: The three themes where: "The experience of the nurse" with the sub-themes "To be sure of what you are doing"," To be neat and clean" and "To be nice and funny", "Communication and interaction with me" with the sub-themes "Talking with me" and "Showing with your body language", "Participation- I want to be involved" with the sub-themes "To be in-volved in the decision-making", "To be in control" and "See the whole me" .

Conclusion: The children had both positive and negative experiences of nurses. It was shown in most of the articles that the children wanted the nurse to be their friend. The personality of the nurse was also important and it was described that the nurse should be nice, cheerful and kind while caring for the children. The children also wanted the nurse to involve them in their care and put the child in the first room
