Abstract [en]

Aircraft maintenance can be described as a complex and interactive technical system. The ever increasing complex system of aircraft maintenance places much greater demands on the professionals carrying out this work including the leadership and management roles. This ethnographical study analyses this complex and intelligent aircraft maintenance work. Sharing of professional knowledge is of vital importance enhancing the innovative and creative work done in this domain. The aim of this paper is to highlight the challenges for the leadership and the management teams to effectively link complexity to the highly collective human intelligence that flourishes in this military domain. The challenges will be based on the empirical findings showing how the intrinsic leadership, collective intelligence and social dimensions such as cooperation, professional knowledge and management skills are played out within the communities of aircraft maintenance.

Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on a professional perspective in the use of information systems. Information systems for knowledge integration in professional practices constitutes of dynamics for management and organization, where the professional work practice and information systems can be developed together. This thesis is started out from studies of two different professional work practices, aircraft maintenance and emergency health care, as both can be characterized as time- and life critical. The two different professional work practices can be seen as two different profession types. The four research questions in this thesis are:

What importance do the characteristics for T- and L-professions have, respectively, on the use of information systems?

What general challenges can be derived from professions’ use of information systems?

What importance do the management and organization have for T- and L-professions, respectively, on the use of information systems?

How can the use of information systems be organized in order to facilitate knowledge integration within professional work practices?

Two case studies with ethnographical influences have been conducted where the two different profession types constitute two defined cases.  These studies were initially inductive and exploratory, for then becoming more explanatory and somewhat normative at the final stage. One of the studies was conducted within the aircraft maintenance performed at the Swedish Airforce in cooperation with Volvo Aero Corporation. The other study was conducted within the Emergency Health Care incorporated in the NU Health Care, in Västra Götaland, Sweden.

The contribution of the thesis is aimed at showing that professional characteristics are important for trust, sense-making and engagement for, and in use of information systems. The thesis shows the need for seeing structures between professions and management as crucial for knowledge integration with information systems, where a new integrated leadership is suggested. This new integrated leadership is important for guiding the knowledge integration. Moreover, the thesis suggests a new approach to knowledge integration in order to bridge organic boundaries and limitations. This approach is called transact. Transacts within professional work practices are important in order to develop existing and future use of information systems as well as to integrate information systems into the complex work, so it can be effectively performed, with a high quality.
