Cancer patients experience of communication with nurses : A literature study (English)
Abstract [en]

Background:

Cancer is a global health concern, with 20 million new cases diagnosed each year. Cancer can present in various forms that significantly impair health and can be life-threatening which turns patients' lives into a daily challenge. Regular hospital visits can be emotionally exhausting.

Aim:

The aim of this study was to highlight how adult cancer patients experience communication in the care encounter with the nurse.

Method:

The literature review was based on an integrative compilation of qualitative research inspired by metasynthesis. Systematic searches were conducted to find scientific articles related to cancer patients' experiences.

Results:

The results resulted in two themes and five subthemes. It was found that good communication from the nurse plays an important role in the patient's well-being, participation, and autonomy in their care and treatment. This is because patients appreciate when the nurse listens actively, acknowledges their feelings, and creates compassion and empathy in the communication.

Conclusion:

Person-centered communication promotes well-being and strengthens the patient’s understanding, involvement, and autonomy in managing their cancer illness. Knowledge development in communication among nurses in educational programs should teach advanced knowledge of communication strategies with a focus on addressing the needs of the patient through effective communication.
