Digital Stressing, Leading and Learning Solution: Perspectives from Employees in a Scandinavian University

Considering the rapid progress of technology and changing work patterns, it has become essential to understand the concept of digital stress in hybrid work environments. This thesis investigates the experiences and viewpoints of employees at a Scandinavian university in order to reveal the many effects of digital stress. Fourteen individuals were interviewed using a qualitative descriptive research method, conducted using Microsoft Teams.
The data, examined using MAXQDA, highlighted significant themes and codes that emphasize the complexities of digital stress in remote work and the vital part of leadership in establishing supportive work environments. Participants acknowledged the advantages of hybrid employment, including enhanced work-life balance and mental well-being, despite obstacles such as excessive information and communication barriers.
The study highlights the significance of leadership in establishing explicit limits and ensuring the well-being of employees, underlining the worth of supporting leadership in handling the difficulties of remote and hybrid work. Proposed are practical recommendations to reduce digital stress and increase well-being. These tactics include implementing digital detox days, engaging in virtual team-building activities, and offering wellness programs that encourage a healthy balance between digital involvement and offline activities.
This thesis highlights the importance of ongoing learning and collaborative efforts in reducing digital stress in hybrid work environments. The university can develop resilient and adaptive employees by promoting a culture of continuous learning and valuing the well-being of employees. This enables the university to remain competitive in the face of changing circumstances.
The results offer valuable insights for managing digital stress in different corporate settings and serve as a foundation for future research in diverse industries and demographic categories.
