Abstract [en]

Blue Zones are areas in the world where people live longer than the average person. The common assumption is that a good economy leads to people living longer lives.

The aim for this thesis was to find out if the economy was the biggest cause for a high life expectancy in the countries of the Blue Zones. It was done by looking the countries where the Blue Zones exists, which are Italy, Greece, Japan, Costa Rica, and USA.

To determine if the economy is the biggest cause for a high life expectancy, articles about the Blue Zones were analyzed.

Also, panel data regression was used as a statistical method, where the dependent variable was life expectancy, and the independent variables were health, physical activity, diet, and economy. The variables were analyzed on an annual basis from 1995 to 2016.

The result from the analysis showed that economy was not the biggest cause for a high life expectancy. The biggest causes for a high life expectancy were to live a healthy life and to have a good diet.
