Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how a character designer goes about creating a character with an antagonistic role in a story. The work examines several different underlying factors that can influence a character designer's choice in a work process. What the study emphasizes is the visual characteristics of an antagonistic character, to gain a deeper understanding and find possible patterns within this field. The topic poses a significance because it touches both the artistic process behind the creation of characters and also the human perception of evil and how it is portrayed in popular culture.

In order to achieve this, five interviews have been conducted with expert individuals who have several years of work experience in the field. The theories applied were Kinesics which focused on gestures, body posture and posing, facial expressions and eye contact. Symbolic Interactionism, which explains that the creation of different behaviors and movements depends on people's environment and culture was also implemented together with an Animation perspective. The result shows a repeated pattern where respondents return to specific underlying factors such as basic shapes, facial expressions and general appearance, composition, body posture and demeanor, as well as movement and pantomime.
