This paper examines the ongoing issue with pension inequality between men and women within Swedish municipalities. By utilizing data from the Swedish pension agency and Statistics Sweden between the years 2012 to 2022, this study analyzes different factors that are associated with the gender pension gap within all 290 Swedish municipalities. Using panel data analysis and the fixed effect models to account for unobserved, time-invariant characteristics within each municipality.
To understand the gender specific effects of the variables included two separate fixed effect models were employed, one for men and one for women, additionally a model analyzing the pension ratio between men and women were used. The findings of the study show that areas with higher population density have a higher pension gap, similarly with education level, even though its beneficial for bout genders tend to increase the gender gap.
Additionally marital status and having children significantly affect pension outcomes for men and for women. The results highlight the need for policy changes in order to eliminate the gender pension gap.
