The vital transport : The intensive care nurse's experience of intrahospital transport (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund:

Abstract [en]

Background:

Intrahospital transport of a critically ill patient is a risky process and the transportmust be of high quality. The critical care nurse has a central role in promoting patient safety at intrahospital transport and must be able to handle the medical equipment and various incidents that may occur. There is a lack of research on how critical care nurses experience intrahospital transport which is the purpose of this literature review.Aim: The purpose of the essay was to describe critical care nurses' experiences of intrahospital transport.

Method:

Systematic literature review with integrative analysis method by Whittemore & Knafl (2005).

Results:

In the result, two themes emerged with five subthemes, Team cooperation and communication, the importance of competence, promotion of measures, risks of incidents and reduced resources increase insecurity. The result showed how important the team and communication between different professions was for a well-functioning transport. It also became clear that experience and competence made the critical care nurses safer and how meaningful it was to use checklists and routines. The security and resources at the intensive care unit were left in place and the possibility of care and measures in the event of incidents at the intrahospital transport were reduced. Patient safety was threatened, which led to the experience of anxiety when safety was left in the intensive care unit.

Conclusion:

Intrahospital transport is a resource- and time-consuming process that causes stress and anxiety. Patient safety at intrahospital transport is promoted through a strong team with well-functioning communication skills and a high level of competence. The critical care nurse's competence, experience and careful preparation create good conditions for a safe intrahospital transport.
