Caring for a potential organ donor : the intensive care nurses experiences - A systematic literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund:

Abstract [en]

Background:

The shortage of organs is a problem nationally and globally and every year many people die while waiting for a new organ. Organ donation can only take place in an intensive care unit, and it is the role of the intensive care nurse and the doctor to identify a potential organ donor. In the organ donation process, different professions collaborate, and the intensive care nurse has an important role. Therefore, it is interesting to explore how intensive care nurses experience the care of a potential organ donor.

Aim:

The aim was to explore intensive care nurses’ experiences of caring for a potential organ donor.

Method:

The study was a systematic literature review described by Bettany-Saltikov and McSherrys. The study was based on 12 qualitative articles.

Results:

From the result and its analysis process, 1 main category, 2 categories and 7 subcategories were created. The results showed that the intensive care nurses experienced the care of a potential organ donor as complex and demanding, where the lack of experience and education of the organ donation process was a fact. Debriefing and support from colleagues were of great importance but lacking. To meet relatives was demanding and difficult, and to understand the concept of death was complex and could contribute to the care experienced more difficult.

Conclusion:

The intensive care nurses have a key role in the organ donation process, which is perceived as demanding, both psychologically, physically, and existentially. Debriefing, support from colleagues and continuous reflection occasions were aspects that could be developed to improve the intensive care nurses’ professional competence of caring for a potential organ donor.
