Bakgrund:

Under 2023 vårdades 3 451 barn i åldrarna 0–19 på en intensivvårdsavdelning (IVA) i Sverige. Bredvid de sjuka barnen stod föräldrar i väntan på besked. Barn har andra fysiska, psykiska, emotionella, medicinska och omvårdnadsmässiga behov i jämförelse med den vuxna populationen. Barnets tillstånd kan snabbt försämras och kan leda till komplexa situationer för föräldrarna och IVA-personalen.

Syfte:

Att beskriva föräldrars upplevelser av att deras barn vårdas på IVA.

Metod:

Kvalitativ litteraturöversikt med scoping review-design.

Resultat:

Fyra huvudteman framkommer i resultatet: Den förändrade livsvärlden som beskriver IVA-miljön som både förvirrande och trygg samt föräldrars upplevelser av att inte alltid befinna sig hos sitt barn på IVA. Det andra temat beskriver föräldrarnas omvälvande känslor vilket beskrivs som en emotionell berg- och dalbana. Här beskrivs även föräldrarnas rädslor för att förlora sitt barn. Det tredje temat beskriver hinder och möjligheter till föräldraskap, vilket berör ämnen såsom anknytning, delaktighet och känsla av kompetens hos föräldrarna. Resultatets fjärde tema handlar om vårdpersonalens betydelse vilket lyfter vikten av god kommunikation, information, stöd samt relationen till vårdpersonalen. IVA sjuksköterskan är en viktig person när det kommer till att få föräldrar att känna sig trygga under sin vistelse på IVA. Genom att sträva efter en kontinuitet i personalstyrkan kan en god och förtroendeingivande relation byggas, vilket i sin tur ligger till grund för en välfungerande kommunikation.

Slutsats:

Genom att erbjuda stöd och utbildning till föräldrarna kan IVA-sjuksköterskan bidra med sin erfarenhet, empati och trygghet. Detta ger föräldrarna förutsättningar att uppleva kontroll, självständighet och kompetens. Trygga föräldrar leder till att det sjuka barnet känner tröst och trygghet under sin vistelse på IVA.

Background:

In 2023, 3 451 children aged 0–19 were cared for in the intensive care unit (ICU) in Sweden. Next to the sick children stood parents, waiting for news. Children have different physical, mental, emotional, medical and nursing needs compared to the adult population. The child's behavioral conditions can lead to rapid deterioration in the health condition, which inturn leads to complex situations for the parents and the workforce in the ICU.

Aim:

Explore parents' experiences when their children are being cared for in the ICU.

Method:

Qualitative literature review with scoping review design.

Results:

Four main themes emerged in the result: The changed life world, which describes the ICU environment as both confusing and safe, and parents' experiences of not always being with their child in the ICU. The second theme describes the overwhelming emotions of the parents, which is described as an emotional roller coaster. The parents' fear of losing their child are also described here. The third theme describes obstacles and opportunities to parenthood, which involves topics such as attachment, participation and feeling like a competent parent. The fourth theme is about the importance of healthcare professionals, which highlights the importance of good communication, information, support and the relationship with the staff. The ICU nurse is an important person when it comes to making parents feel safe during their stay in the ICU. By striving for continuity among the staff, a good and trust-worthy relationship can be built, which is the basis for well-functioning communication.

Conclusion:

By offering support and education to the parents, the ICU nurse can contribute with her experience, empathy and security. This gives parents the prerequisite to experience control, independence and competence. Confident parents to feelings of safety and consolement for the sick child during their stay in the ICU.
