Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

An increasingly common concept in the labour market is short-term and flexible employment, which has come to be known as gig work. One example of such employment in the gig economy is substitute work in schools. In this paper, a quantitative study has been conducted on substitute teachers (N = 215) belonging to a substitute pool, to see if there is a relationship between the personalities of substitute teachers and their experience of having a flexible and temporary assignment employment. The study was based on a questionnaire containing the HEXACO personality test (BHI 24) and questions about the experience of flexibility in the workplace. Extraversion (r = .28), Agreeableness (r = .29) and Openness to experience (r = .19) were the personality traits that correlated most strongly with the construct we refer to in this study as work-related flexibility. Honesty-Humility (r = .03) and Emotionality (r = -.07) did not show a statistically significant relationship with flexibility. The study shows that there is a correlation between perceived flexibility in gig work and personality, but there are many other factors that also influence the outcome of the correlation.
