Abstract [sv]

Syfte:

Abstract [en]

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to explore how secondary school teachers (students age between 12-16) experience safety in their workplace and to examine which factors affect teachers' perceived safety within the school environment.

Method:

In the current study semi-structured interviews were used. In the present study, eight secondary teachers between the ages of 25 and 65 were interviewed. The teacher worked in Swedish schools located in Värstra Götaland. The interviews lasted between 30 and 45 minutes and were recorded and then transcribed.

Results:

The results of this study show that all respondents in the current study feel safe in the workplace. Although they felt safe in the workplace some respondents felt less secure in certain situations. However, all respondents feel that good relationships with colleagues, students and management benefit their perceived feeling of safety. In the present study, the perceived feeling of safety has been shown through safety-increasing and safety-decreasing factors.

Conclusions:

The conclusion of the present study is that secondary teachers' experiences of safety differs and there are factors that are perceived to raise and lower the perceived safety. Based on a lack of research both nationally and internationally, future research should focus on teachers' safety and what creates a safe school environment for all staff and students.
