This paper addresses the politeness strategies used in two YouTube videos with Andrew Tate. The YouTube videos are excerpts from longer videos where Andrew Tate is featured as a guest. The politeness strategies are adapted from a previous study by Brown and Levinson (1987). Brown and Levinson (1987) also present the framework for face which was also used for this analysis. Andrew Tate was chosen due to his popularity in certain groups, mainly young men and as his influence is widespread it is beneficial to analyze how politeness is used in his conversations.
The aim of the essay is to illustrate how Tate is using politeness strategies to drive conversations with other participants. The analysis was constructed by transcribing two YouTube videos and analyzing the speech that was used. This essay shows what politeness strategy Tate used, as well as what ones the other participants used. Tate primarily used bald on record while the other participants used negative politeness.
