Nurses experiences of meeting women exposed to violence within a healthcare setting : A literature study (English)
Abstract [en]

Background:

Violence against women is a global health problem and nurses are in an ideal position to discover and help these women. Research shows that nurses need more knowledge and better routines to support women exposed to violence effectively. Since these women often interact with healthcare, nurses are likely to encounter these situations in their professional roles. Identifying signs of violence requires nurses to have knowledge, time, and established routines.

Aim:

The aim of the study was to describe nurses’ experiences of meeting women exposed to violence within the healthcare system.Method: A literature study based on analysis of qualitative research.

Results:

The results were divided into two main themes: organizational shortcomings and prejudices, uncertainty and emotional impact, and six sub-themes: lack of time in the meeting with the woman, lacking routines and responsibility, insufficient knowledge and training, nurses’ preconceived notions, uncertainty among nurses and the emotional impact during the meeting with the woman.

Conclusion:

Several factors influence how nurses interact with women exposed to violence, creating challenges in their interactions with these women. The authors believe that violence against women requires a bigger part in nursing education, but also further education in the workplace. Furthermore, well-defined routines are necessary, both for asking about violence and determining how follow-ups should take place.
