Nurses experiences in caring for patients with palliative care at the end-of-life stage in the patients homes (English)
Abstract [en]

The number of elderly individuals is increasing and this means that more people are being treated in palliative care. Around 75 thousand people in Sweden require palliative care annually. Palliative care is an approach aimed at enhancing the quality of life and easing suffering in patients facing life-threatening diseases or conditions. Patients must be met with spiritual, social, psychological and physical needs if desired.

The aim of the study was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients in palliative care at the end of life at home. This was a literature study and was conducted based on qualitative research. Nine articles were identified and reviewed. The literature study identified two main themes and six sub themes based on the identified articles. These formed the foundation for the outcome.

The results revealed different experiences of the nurses. The nurses experienced a lot of emotions in the form of negative and positive feelings. The nurses also described the importance of good teamwork and the importance of having a good relationship with the patients and their relatives. The studies concluded that nurses require additional time to be able to manage emotions and that teamwork leads to a higher perceived security. This then leads to improved palliative care.
