Nursing Students’ experiences of peer learning during clinical practice : In a Swedish context (English)
Abstract [en]

In Sweden, there is a shortage of licenced healthcare professionals. The competence description for a registered nurse include the ability to supervise students. A change in the Higher Education Ordinance states that least half of the nursing program should consist of clinical education. To ensure efficiency, while simultaneously ensuring quality of clinical practice, the student-active model peer learning is introduced and established. Students with the same level of nursing education collaborate to allocate, structure and care for patients in pair.

The aim of this study was to illustrate nursing students’ experience of peer learning during clinical practice in a Swedish context. An integrative synthesis of qualitative research was used. Through systematic and direct search, seven articles were selected. Fribergs five-step model was used as a basis for the analysis in which three themes and six subthemes emerged; Learning towards the mutual goal, illustraded that peer learning promotes learning and development for the upcoming profession. The established knowledge was considered applicable in all form of nursingcare. Sense of well-being, described that students were confident felt safe and less nervous. Working together increased the students self-confidence and self-esteem. Be situated at the clinical practice, demonstrated that compromising in order to perform the nursing care procedures. were both challenging and daunting. However, the students learned how to cooperate and interact. It appeared allicated time for reflection was important.

Conclusion; Students using peer learning establish nursingcare skills and are prepared for their professional role. The educational model can be considered quality assurance and effective.
