Abstract [en]

Background: We are facing an increase in mental illness worldwide. This had led to expanded research and interest in physical activity and its health benefits against depression. Physical activity has, in previous research, been known for its benefits to health but an im-portant area of development in healthcare is to increase knowledge on how physical activity can be used as a treatment for patients.

Aim: The study aimed to describe individuals' experiences of physical activity in depression.

Method: The study is based on a qualitative method and the analysis is based on the five-steps model for the possibility to understand experience ofthe importance of physical activity of depressed individuals.

Results: The findings generated two themes and four sub-themes. The first theme “importance of motivation" is presented in two subthemes, “Supportive resources provided motivation" and "Barriers contributed to in-activity”. Individuals describe their experiences with factors that promote or hinder motivation for physical activity. The second theme “Improved health” is presented in two sub-themes “Improved individual well-being” and ” Physical activity was a health promoting treatment”. Individuals share positive experiences of physical activity and its impact on wellbeing.

Conclusion: The study emphasizes the importance of promoting and motivating physical activity as a treatment for mild to moderate depression. Symptom relief, improved energy levels and increased body awareness are aspects that generated an increased health for the individuals. Nursing aims to promote health and prevent illness which highlights the importance of nurses having knowledge in the application of physical activity as a treatment
