Dorks and Trust Fund Turds: Representation of Social Groups Through Language in Bully: Scholarship Edition
University West, Department of Social and Behavioural Studies.

Abstract [en]

This study analyzes the representation of the nerd and preppy social groups through their language use in the video game Bully: Scholarship Edition. This is achieved by using concepts such as stereotyping and semantic fields to pinpoint patterns and characteristics assigned to the analyzed social groups’ collective language use. From the deep pool of data collected from the game, stereotypes assigned to the in-game groups are compared to their real-life counterparts.Out-group perspectives on the analyzed groups are also investigated. The study finds that the nerds largely follow their real-life stereotypes, whereas the preppies both follow real-life stereotypes and have another significantly negative stereotype assigned to them. In their representations, the nerds are given some redeeming qualities, whereas the preppies are practically constantly painted in a negative light
