This paper investigates the conceptual metaphors of light and darkness. However, it focuses on how their standard meaning, which can be summarized as light is positive and darkness is negative, is interchanging with each other. The study focuses on the two conceptual metaphors NEGATIVITY IS LIGHT and POSITIVITY IS DARKNESS in song lyrics by the band Arcade Fire and what the target and source domain of these metaphors are. First, a corpus with all the applicable lyrics were made, and then a search was conducted for the keywords light, dark, white, and black. These lyrics containing the keywords were then analyzed to see if the keywords were used in a literal way or in a metaphorical way. The results show that three songs contain the conceptual metaphor NEGATIVITY IS LIGHT: “We Used to Wait,” and the metaphor in this song uses the domains ADDICTION TO TECHNOLOGY ARE FLASHING LIGHTS, “Reflektor,” uses the domains LONELINESS IS WHITE,and “Sprawl II (Mountain Beyond Mountains),” uses the domains THE UNKNOWN IS LIGHT and UNDESIRABILITY IS LIGHT. The song “Sprawl II (Mountain Beyond Mountains)” is the only song that contains the conceptual metaphor POSITIVITY IS DARKNESS, and the domains used in that metaphor are SAFETY IS DARKNESS.
