Abstract [en]
This thesis attempts to explain the role of diaspora women in peacebuilding and examine how these women actors pursue the peace process. A qualitative case study focusing on the Somali communities and reconciliation in Somalia, with a specific emphasis on gathering data from Somali diaspora women in Sweden, can be a valuable and insightful research endeavor. This type of study allows for an in-depth exploration of complex issues related to the peace process in Somalia and the role of the Somali diaspora, particularly women, in contributing to reconciliation efforts. Randolph Bourne's transnationalism concept of diaspora and peace feminism theory are also applied. International approach is used to describe trans-nation, which refers to a country's interconnected culture, ideas, and economics with another country. The study examined these following questions: 1- How do Somali women in the diaspora approach and contribute to the reconciliation processes in Somalia? 2 -How do women overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of contributing to peacemaking? 4- How is gender issue viewed in the Somali context in peacebuilding? The study’s finding shows that the positive role of diaspora women actors in peacebuilding including reconciliation, remittance of money, mediation, and gender equality. The results of the research indicate also that the diaspora role through the bottom-up approach led to Somaliland and Puntland regions in peace with stability, while southern regions employed a top-down approach which caused less effective outcomes and marginalized middle and grassroots levels. The study recommends more inclusive peacebuilding efforts by international peacemakers, including Somali diaspora women.
