Nurses’ experiences of caring for young patients in palliative care (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: The aim with palliative care is to improve the patient's quality of life. This by providing the patient's unique needs and wishes with evidence-based care. In palliative care the focus is not only on the patients, but also their loved ones. Many nurses have limited experience of caring for young patients in need of palliative care. It is therefore important that nurses have knowledge of how to care for these patients.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe nurse’s experience of caring for young patients in palliative care.

Method: A literature-based study based on qualitative and quantitative research was conducted. Twelve scientific articles were analyzed.

Results: The results showed three themes and nine sub-themes. The themes were: Being forced to face and manage own emotions, The need to be perceptive and Organizational prerequisites and hinders.

Conclusion: Nurses feel a stronger personal connection to young patients that need palliative care and often identify themselves in the patient. They also feel uncertain in their professional role due to lack of knowledge. Nurses need time to reflect on their experiences caring for the patients but find it hard to do so during work hours. The lack of time during patient meetings also affects their ability to provide care.
