Det pratas om psykisk ohälsa och vikten av att söka hjälp, missbrukspatienter anses vara de svåraste att behandla ur kuratorers perspektiv eftersom missbrukare oftast har en nedsatt kognitiv förmåga samt att det är vanligt förekommande att missbrukspatienter förnekar eller förminskar sitt missbruk vilket leder till bristande motivation för behandling. Studiens syfte var att undersöka vilka utmaningar kuratorer upplever i arbetet med missbrukspatienter, frågeställningar som studien behandlade var dels att undersöka kuratorers utmaningar, dels kuratorers egenvårdande strategier. Studien är av kvalitativ forskningsdesign, sex deltagare deltog i studien och semistrukturerade enskilda intervjuer genomfördes med deltagarna. I resultatet framkom det att kuratorer är en utsatt yrkesgrupp och att vissa kuratorer använder sig av strategier för att hantera en och annan känsla som skapas i mötet med missbrukspatienten. I diskussionsdelen tolkas kuratorers emotionella intelligens påverka hur kuratorer tacklar känslor och tankar i arbetet med missbrukspatienter. 

There is talk about mental illness and the importance of seeking help, substance abuse patients are considered the most difficult to treat from the perspective of counselors as substance abusers usually have impaired cognitive ability and that it is common for substance abuse patients to deny or minimize their addiction, which leads to a lack of motivation for treatment. The purpose of the study was to investigate what challenges counselors experience in working with substance abuse patients, questions that the study addressed were partly to examine counselors’ challenges, and partly counselors’ self-care strategies. The study is of qualitative research design, six participants participated in studies and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants. It emerged that counselors are a vulnerable professional group and that some counselors use strategies to deal with one or another feeling that is created in the meeting with the substance abuse patient. In the discussion section, counselors' emotional intelligence is interpreted as influencing how counselors deal with emotions and thoughts in their work with substance abuse patients.
