Abstract [en]

This Master's thesis unraveled the motives behind SMEs' internationalization to the UAE, with a keen focus on how industry differences influenced the proactive or reactive nature of these motives. The study employed an abductive approach, utilizing qualitative methods and a multiple-case study design. Semi-structured interviews with CEOs from two case companies - Combify AB from the land development sector, and Company X from the health and fitness industry - formed the primary data, analyzed using thematic and comparative techniques.

Findings demonstrated that both firms were led by proactive market-seeking and resource-seeking motives, spurred by the burgeoning sectors and abundant resources in the UAE. Network and efficiency-seeking motives were also prevalent, underlining the significance of partnerships and operational optimization in internationalization. While Combify AB and Company X both pursued these motives, their strategic resource-seeking strategies varied, reflecting the intricacy of internationalization pathways.

Industry-specific influences played a crucial role in shaping the companies' internationalization motives. The competitive dynamics and regulatory environments in the land development sector informed Combify AB's strategies, while Company X responded to the high competition and complex supply chains inherent in the health and fitness industry. The political stability of the UAE emerged as a significant, albeit often neglected, consideration in the companies' internationalization decisions.

This research contributes substantially to the literature on SME internationalization, presenting valuable insights for entrepreneurs, business owners, and policymakers. It highlights the need for a comprehensive understanding of internationalization motives and industry-specific influences. Future research should broaden the geographical and industry scope, incorporate large enterprises, and employ diverse methodologies to further deepen our understanding of SME internationalization.
