Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

As society develops, the line between work and private life has become more blurred. The individual needs to balance the demands from the different domains and if one does not succeed, it can result in stress. Work-life balance and stress is a broad field of research, but has previously been focusing on the organisation as a whole. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine the relationship between Work-life balance and stress for first line managers at a production company. The method used for data collection was a web survey and the number of respondents was 62 (N = 62). Two validated instruments were used to compose the questionnaire, Work-life Conflict Scale by Netemeyer et al. (1996) and Perceived Stress Scale 14 by Cohen et al. (1983). The findings indicated a strong relationship between Work-life balance and stress for first line managers. Both Work-family conflict (WFC) and Family-work conflict (FWC) was positively related to stress. Since Work-life balance is the opposite of Work-life conflict, the result implies that the higher level Work-life balance the lower level of stress and vice versa. The result indicated that the same relationship as previous research has found between Work-life balance and stress also applies for first line managers. For future research it would be interesting to examine the relationship for these phenomenon in other levels of the organisation.
