Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the media depiction of Muslims and Islam in the case of Sweden. There has been much research done on this topic and through generalisations and connecting Islam/Muslims to violence and terrorism, the media successfully groups Muslims and Islam in a group of ‘Others’. However there are gaps in the previous research, Sweden is a country that tends to be overlooked when it comes to this topic. The thesis makes use of a mixed-methods approach by qualitatively analysing articles and also collecting data.

The results of this study shows that in contrast to previous research, Sweden does not in fact frame Islam and Muslims as ‘Others’ or ‘us vs them’. The Swedish media does not only lack the frames that make Muslims ‘Others’ but also the quantity of articles. The discovery of this study shows that the West and Islam is not something that is incapable of coexisting, there are in fact countries in the West that do not see Muslims and Islam as ‘Others’ and this could pave the way for the rest of the West and Muslims being able to function and coexist.
