Abstract [en]
The aim of this thesis is to analyze how CNN and FOX NEWS, two prominent American news media outlets, have framed NATO's involvement in Ukraine. Our study is comparative, and we have selected 30 articles from CNN and 27 articles from FOX NEWS for analysis. Our research puzzle revolves around the question of whether the political leanings of these two news media outlets have influenced their coverage of NATO's involvement in Ukraine. To address this question, our gathered data will be analyzed with the help of qualitative content analysis and Entman's framing theory which consists of four functions such as problem diagnosis, roots of the problem, moral evaluation, and remedies. The study's findings indicate that both news media outlets share a similar perspective on the war in Ukraine and NATO's role in it. This is evident from their extensive coverage of quotes from NATO's secretary general and officials from NATO member countries. Furthermore, they exhibit a favorable inclination towards Ukraine's success in the conflict and Russia's defeat. Their suggested remedies predominantly revolve around supporting Ukraine through the provision of weapons or training its soldiers. Additionally, they strongly condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, employing language that conveys negative connotations toward Russia. The findings of our study demonstrate that although there are subtle differences in the coverage provided by both news media outlets, their framing of the war in Ukraine and NATO's involvement in it does not indicate any differences based on their political leanings. Therefore, the results of this study suggest no contentious differences in their coverage.
