Abstract [en]
The interest in learning settings outside of educational institutions has increased during the last decades. Thus, workplaces are being recognized as locations where valuable learning takes place. This qualitative research aims to contribute to the research field of workplace learning by providing an understanding of how people at a municipal workplace learn. It further investigates what kind of aspects affect the workplace learning as well as how the workplace learning can be improved.
Specifically, this case study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with a management team at the Campus Västra Skaraborg of the Lidköping municipality. It draws on distinctions of knowledge and learning theories at the workplace focusing on formal, non-formal, and informal learning.
The thematic analysis of the data shows that employees at the municipality learn more non-formally through reflecting on new knowledge in group settings or own research and informally through conversations and asking questions. Furthermore, the study finds that leadership and the organizational culture can encourage the learning of employees greatly and can thus improve learning outcomes in general. The study suggests that dedicating a certain amount of time to the learning of new information can enhance workplace learning as well.
