Distance measurement with Bluetooth 5.0 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study investigates the possibility of converting Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) measurements to a distance in meters. Bluetooth technology has several advantages for performing distance measurements, as the technology is found in almost all technology gadgets that private individuals carry with them in everyday life, everything from smartphones to smartwatches. This means that performing distance measurements using Bluetooth is readily available to the public without requiring additional hardware or specialized devices.

Using this technology, we perform measurements where only RSSI is used to estimate a distance in meters using a formula. A total of seven individual measurements were made with different units, these measurements are presented in the form of tables and diagrams.

The result shows that using Bluetooth 5.0 for distance measurements is not as simple as it seems, there is a big difference between the actual distance and the distance calculated from the measurements.
