Abstract [en]

DFDS Logistics Contracts AB is an organization belonging to the DFDS Group, which operates in 25 countries. The Danish company DFDS is active in the logistics industry and operates among Europe's most oversized assimilated shipping and logistics networks. The organization wanted to identify problems in its cross-dock terminal. The study that has been conducted has aimed to improve the process in the cross-dock terminal. The study's goalwas to identify problems in the process, and to find suggestions for improvement.

Identifying problems was based on the literature review of various tools and methods outlining how the problem can be tackled. The process problems were identified using a current state map and interviews with employees from the terminal. These methods were used in the preparation of the improvement suggestions. The current state map identified problems from the waiting times within each process step. The interviews identified thequantity of problems and the cause of them and concluded why these problems occur.

The improvement suggestions presented were based on the studied literature and the suggestions and ideas of the terminal employees. Six improvement suggestions were designed to make the cross-dock terminal more efficient by reducing the total waiting time in the process and thus reducing the total lead time. The presented improvement suggestions can be generalized and applied to other organizations, partly in different industries.

The improvement suggestions are mainly based on Lean principles. The focus has been on making it easy to do easily from the beginning, reducing the non-value-added time, which is waste, and involving employees in the work process, by observing the process and getting an overall picture of it, performing a current state map with the employees identified where problems occur and relevant data such as waiting times and cycle times. As well as interviews that identified the problems, the cause of the problems, what wastage was being carried out,and a suggestion for improvement, the purpose and goal of the study were achieved.

The value of the study lies in how the combination of the literature study and the methodological choices achieved the purpose and goal. It can be concluded that involvingthe company's employees when identifying problems in a process and finding improvementsuggestions is beneficial on several levels. The study outlines how a cross-dock process can be improved by identifying problems.
