Nurses’ experiences of caring for people with chronic pain (English)
Abstract [en]
Background: Chronic pain is defined as persistent pain that has lasted at least three months. This definition encompasses several different chronic pain-inducing conditions some of these are fibromyalgia, chronic back pain and headaches. It is common for older people to suffer from chronic pain this may be due to age-related changes. It emerges that people suffering from chronic pain can develop a comorbidity in the form of a depression.
Aim: Nurses’ experiences of caring for people with chronic pain.
Method: The method of contributing to evidence-based nursing with a basis and analysis of qualitative research. Nine scientific articles were analyzed through Friberg's five-step model.
Results: The analysis resulted in three categories “Problems for the nurse to care for people with chronic pain”, “Lack of knowledge in the care of people with chronic pain” and “The importance of good relationships in chronic pain”. It appears that alternative treatments can have a beneficial effect for people with chronic pain, but that these treatments are not always performed due to financial conditions or lack of knowledge among nurses. Nurses explain the importance of person-centred care to have the opportunity to make a correct assessment.
Conclusion: For sustainable care of people with chronic pain, the nurse needs to have a good care relationship with the person and access to adequate treatments for the person suffering from chronic pain.
