Working during a pandemic : Nurses experiences of caring patients with covid-19 (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: At the end of 2019, a new variant of the SARS-Co-V-2 coronavirus was discovered, which came to be known as covid-19. On March 11, 2020, The World Health Organization (WHO) declared that covid-19 constitutes a pandemic and the whole world was faced with great and difficult challenges in an already burdened and strained healthcare system, the nurses had to work under tough and exhausting conditions.

Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with covid-19 in the in patient care.

Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach and analysis. Eleven articles, found via the databases Cinahl and Psycinfo were reviewed and analyzed.

Results: The result of the study describes nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with covid-19. In the result, two themes were found; Nurses Mental experiences with sub-themes Negative emotions and Positive emotions and Nurses Physical experiences with sub-themes Difficulties with protective equipment and Altered work conditions.

Conclusion: At the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic the negative emotions were predominant, but over time, positive emotions such as optimism, calmness, increased team spirit and gratitude were found. Another major challenge during the covid-19 pandemic was handling and working with protective equipment and the lack of protective equipment. The changes in the work environment entailed longer work shifts, limited resources working according to new guidelines and lack of knowledge became challenges to be able to perform good and safe care
