Abstract [en]

Most Swedish students are exposed to video games in some way every day. Some of these games have been translated into Swedish, but most are in English. Several researchers (e.g., Gee, 2006. Thorne, 2008. Vásques and Ovalle, 2019) have found that when playing video games, users tend to have their language influenced in some way. Earlier studies focused on how older games used both language and visuals to create an immersive world for the players to explore and how players tend to assimilate the language from these constructed worlds. The intention of this study is to find what type of language users are exposed to when playing video games, more specifically Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. To get an understanding of the language used within the game, a total of fourteen different Orcs from the game were viewed, to find a variety of how Orcs speak. Firstly, the speeches were analysed to find differences in how the Orcs speak, and what they speak about. Afterwards, words used by the Orcs were analysed to find what kind of language students are exposed to; this was divided into two categories; Formal and Semantic. It was found that many of the words used within the game are not necessarily semantic within the story of the game. Instead, most Orcs speak about what could be placed within minor semantic fields connected to their personalities.
