Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Coping with stressful events in our daily lives is dependent on an individual's own perception of resources. It is therefore essential to not let the stress become chronic. When it does become chronic, the outcome might result in a person ending up being burned out, which can have a long recovery process.

Purpose: The main purpose of this thesis is to determine what unique contribution perceived social support has on the correlation between personality and burnout.

Method: The demographics of this study had (N = 119) participants with an age span between 18–65. The respondents were chosen out of a comfort selection through social media platforms Facebook and Linkedin. The participants had to fill out a questionnaire revolving about personality, perceived social support and burnout.

Results: After having included variables emotional instability, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and control variables age and gender, did the significance of perceived social support persist. The results showed that perceived social support had a decreasing effect on burnout.

Conclusions: The unique results show the implications for the perceived social support and it’s relevance on burnout. It is therefore of importance that individuals who are at risk of developing burnout are met with a good perceived social support, because it can be seen as are source for good health and prosperity.
