Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Stress today is one of the most common reasons for sickness and absence from work. Law enforcement officers are exposed to a unique type of stress where fast decisions are demanded in critical situations. Today there is a good amount of both male and female officers in Sweden. Several studies of how stress is experienced by officers has been made but how does the experienced stress differ between the sexes? The hypothesis of this study is that female officers experience higher levels of stress than male officers. There is also an assumption that females are more likely to experience the conflicts that arises between work life and family life. But how does that actually look in the Swedish police force? Are females more affected by this conflict? This study is cross-sectional and based on quantity data collection. It is carried out by sending out surveys where the officers themselves rate their perceived levels of stress related to work and the conflict between work life and family life. The results from this study shows that female officers experience more stress and more conflict between work life and private life than their male colleagues. It also shows a small difference regarding perceived conflict between private life and work life, where the female officers experience a greater conflict than male officers. When compared to earlier studies in this field the results show that it differs as some studies finds differences depending on gender and others do not.
