Abstract [en]

Today, over two and a half billion people use social media. Social media are taking an increasingly large place in an individual's everyday life, which thus makes it interesting to see how this is related to people's actions from a sociological perspective. We found it interesting to see how social media relates to the social construction of the ideal mother. Through Mead and his theory of significant symbols and the generalized other, the study aims to investigate how first-time mothers reflect on their new role as new mothers via social media. To collect the study's data material, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven first-time mothers aged 25–40, all of whom were users of social media. Through a thematic analysis of the empirical material, three main themes were formed as a result of social media, awareness, and belonging. The results show that mothers via social media are reflexive in their role as mothers, mainly because they take on the same attitudes as other mothers on social media.
