Abstract [en]

At the end of 2019, a new disease called Covid-19 was discovered, spreading rapidly across the world, and causing a pandemic. In addition to all the deaths caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the world economy was affected in a way no one was prepared for. This empirical paper analyzes the impact Covid-19 pandemic has had on the economic growth in Sweden in 2020.The data has been collected from OurWorldInData.com and the Swedish Central Bureau of Statisitcs (Statistiska centralbyrån, or SCB), comprising total weekly-confirmed Covid-19 cases and deaths, weekly average stringency index and weekly moving average GDP per capita. The analyzed period is between March 15, 2020, when the pandemic began in Sweden and until the 31st of December 2020. This study uses multiple linear regression model conducted from the Ordinary Least Squares method. The results from the OLS-regression confirm the negative impact Covid-19 have had on economic growth in Sweden in 2020. To avoid a continuous recession and for a recovery to take place, policymakers need to take drastic decisions.
