Women’s experiences of postpartum depression : A literature study (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Every year, 10–15 percent of all women are affected by postpartum depression in Sweden. Postpartum depression is a significant mental health problem and a major obstacle for women of child bearing age. The prevalence of postpartum depression differs in the world between high- and low-income countries, Europe by 8% and the middle East by 26%. Stigmatizing is a problem among mothers and a major barrier to seeking support.

Aim: The aim of the study was to shed light on women's experiences of postpartum depression.

Method: A literature-based study based on qualitative research to gain a deeper understanding of postpartum depression. The method used for this literature study was an analysis of qualitative research based on Fribergs five-stage model.

Results: The results showed two themes and six sub-themes. The themes were: “It didn't turnout the way I imagined” and “Need for support from others.”

Conclusion: Women experienced postpartum depression differently. Women with postpartum depression felt stigmatized in social contacts, society and by health care, which led to the fact that they didn’t sought help. Normalization of postpartum depression and being able to understand women’s experiences allow nurses to break the stigma and provide the right information, support and care.
