Patients experiences of living with Diabetes mellitus type 2 (English)
Abstract [en]

Background

Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) is a chronic disease that is increasing in line with the welfare society. An increased intake of sugar, fat, a low-fiber diet and lack of exercise are contributing factors to the disease's increase among both children and adults. DMT2 may affect patients' quality of life and create a life suffering. Carrying out self-care on daily basis isof great importance in order to avoid future complications.

Aim

The aim of this study was to describe patients´experience of living with diabetes mellitus type 2.

Method

The method of this study was a literature-based study based on qualitative research. The articles that were used were analyzed according to the Friberg (2017) five-step model.

Results

The results were compiled by three themes and seven subthemes. The themes were Manage their illness, participation in their care and requirements for lifestyle changes. The first theme described accepting one's illness is a process that takes different lengths of time for different individuals. In order to be able to manage one's illness, it has been important to accept one's condition. The second theme is about being involved in one's care, a great emphasis is placed on including patients in their care by individually adapting care, communication and treatment. The third theme described requirements for lifestyle changes in the form of diet and physical activity and they are the most favorable recommendations for people with DMT2

Conclusion

The results showed that patients have different experiences of living with DMT2 and it demands more personalized care. The support patient receives from the health care havea big importance in managing their DMT 2 also their lifestyle changes are an important factor related to DMT 2.
