Experiences of relatives living with a child who´s receiving end of life care (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Every year approximately 21 million children are in need of paediatric palliative care, whereas 2,5 million of these children die each year. Losing a child is an intense grief, therefore the need of relatives should be noted. Implementing a family-centered care is important.

Aim: The aim of this study was to present experiences of relatives living with a child who´s receiving end of life care.

Method: A literature study based on nine scientific articles of qualitative method is presented. The analysis of these nine articles resulted in three main themes and nine subthemes by using Fribergs five-step process.

Results: The results showed that relatives have both positive and negative experiences of the paediatric palliative care. Emotional support, adjusted communication and involving relatives in the care has a great meaning to them. Most relatives preferred having a caring part in their children’s palliative care.

Conclusion: Relatives have a need of support during and after the child has passed away, both physical support and practical services. They appreciated when nurses involved the whole family, noticed relatives needs and provided them with information.
