Elderly people’s experience of a digitalized everyday life during Covid-19 pandemic (English)
Abstract [en]

The Covid-19 pandemic has implicated social distance with stay-at-home restrictions and a more digital everyday life at home and in society. The aim of the study is to gain an understanding of how elderly people 65+ have experienced the digitized everyday life and to investigate whether older people have experienced and been affected by a digital divide during the Covid-19 pandemic. But also, to show any connections that might be between Covid-19 and the digital divide in the society. Through a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews, the empirical material has been produced and led to the results of the study. The results show that the informants had encountered and tested digital solutions such as Kivra, Zoom and FaceTime during Covid-19 but prefer to meet in real life. And that they value the social contact with family and friends and would rather ask for digital help. The conclusion is that none of the informants have experienced a digital divide or that they felt not being a part of the digital society. The informants expressed the combination of social restrictions and possibly not being a part of the society socially and a lack of digital skills as problematic. The informants expressed that as long as there is a social network that the elderly can get help by, and other alternatives to the digital services are still offered they did not perceive themselves as limited in their daily life. The informants' attitude to what digital services have contributed during the pandemic was generally expressed as positive. Even by those who did not prefer the digital services, the Covid-19 pandemic made it possible for several of the informants to see the benefits of digital services.
