Abstract [en]

Blockchain is a technology that faces challenges and needs to be stated to improve its adoption in organizations. Higher Education Institutions (HEI) are an industry where blockchain technology is not widely adopted. This study goes through the challenges of adopting blockchain technology in HEI. The methodology is based on a second study where challenges are found and a primarily qualitative study where interviews are conducted with Ph.D. students, lectures, teachers, and administrative staff from different countries to get additional information to be able to classify the current challenges in blockchain adoption in HEI. Challenges to blockchain adoption in HEI are classified following the Technological, Organization, and Environmental techniques: technology immaturity, limited interoperability, poor usability, complexity of integration, lack of scalability, privacy, security, data immutability, unavailability, lack of adequate skills, financial barriers, lack of management commitment and support, legal issues and lack of regulatory compliance, the market and ecosystem readiness, sustainability and ethical concern.
