The nurse's meeting with veterans with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: The destabilization of Europe and war in Ukraine have put Sweden on trajectory to joining NATO. This could mean in the future that many young men and women will go to conflict areas around the world. Therefore, the relevancy for more knowledge about veterans and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is increasing.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe factors and nurse experiences related to the function of the nurse, when caring for veterans showing symptoms of PTSD.

Method: A literature review

Results: The results were divided into three main themes: The first main theme clarifies the importance of the patient relationship with veterans and the responsibility of the nurse as the patient's representative in the health care system. Sub-themes are; The patient-centered relationship, and the responsibility that follows the role of the patient's representative in healthcare. The second main theme discusses the nurses' views on their own knowledge and screening tools, as well as the factors that influenced the level of knowledge and lack of time. The two sub-themes are; Insufficient knowledge of PTSD, and experience of screening tools and administrative work as time consuming. The third main theme highlights the internal insecurity of the nurse who influenced the treatment of veterans. Below are two sub-themes; Lack of self-confidence, and the fear of asking the question.

Conclusion: According to the result, nurses would likely benefit from more knowledge, support, and better guidelines to increase their confidence and competence in meeting and caring for the veterans.
